CVM BUILDING H AQUACULTURE RESEARCH FACILITY RENOVATION, Mt. Laurel, MD
Project Overview
FDA’s Center for Veterinary Medicine (CVM) conducts aquaculture research to help ensure farmed fish, both domestic and imported, are safe for human consumption. Research in Building H on the CVM Campus supports the regulatory review of aquaculture products through the evaluation of drug safety, effectiveness, residue persistence, metabolism, and environmental impacts.
Under an SPD A/E IDIQ, NKB provided design and construction administration services for the renovation of Building H, a 10,000 SF, single-story aquaculture research facility in Laurel, MD. The project modernized and improved the facility’s water treatment, life-support, safety, monitoring, energy efficiency, and infectious-study systems.
Key objectives included upgrading critical equipment and controls, improving employee safety and facility maintainability, enhancing water treatment and discharge processes, and supporting the facility’s ongoing research mission.
The original entrance to the building is through an aluminum-framed glass door with two leaves. The building was constructed in 1997. This project renovated the systems in the building as identified by the FDA. The systems are as old as the building and need replacement/updating. The structure has industrial character and a concrete block wall on the perimeter with plaster and paint. The building's character matches other buildings nearby on campus.
