AFRL MODERNIZE C4 RESTROOM & BREAKROOM, Rome, NY

Project Overview

Under a term agreement, NKB completed this task under their current IDIQ contract with the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL). NKB is the prime A/E of this contract, providing open-ended architectural, structural, and civil engineering services.

This task entailed modifying the existing facility’s layout and upgrading the facility's restrooms, adjacent Janitor’s room, and Break Area. The new design features a unisex configuration for up to ten (10) users as well as two (2) separate ADA-accessible toilet rooms. The new janitor closet, including storage and a hot water system for the breakroom, is ~150 SF. The new Break Room will feature a center beverage island, kitchenette, vending machines, and recycling stations, as well as a collaboration area with loose tables and chairs and interactive display boards and monitors.

The work included demolishing existing fixtures, partitions, finishes (including floor and wall tile), ceiling tiles and grid, lighting, countertops, and doors. Additionally, new ceiling systems were installed, and new LED lighting fixtures were added. All new finishes match the newly renovated restrooms in another building. Demolition of an adjacent large mezzanine area was also required.

NKB modeled these restrooms after the European design, which includes individually enclosed toilet rooms rather than the typical stalls. This maximizes privacy while creating a unisex restroom. These restrooms are primarily used by executives and guests of the facility.
